navCenter - Evaluation

On launching navCenter you will be presented with a series of screens all of which will be displaying data from navCenter's built in files of simulated data.

A few seconds after the app launches you will likely be presented with a screen similar to the one here titled "EVALUATION TRIAL".

Tapping the "Subscribe" or "Purchase" button will take you to the App Store where you can subscribe or purchase permanently the ability to connect navCenter to your vessels instruments via WiFi.

While you are evaluating navCenter this screen will only appear once per launch of the app.

Once you have purchased or subscribed to navCenter then you will need to update navCenter's settings in order to connect to your vessel. If you want to skip directly to connect navCenter to your vessel then you can do that here.

Otherwise just swipe down to dismiss the Evaluation / Link screen and continue exploring navCenter.

Swiping right to left will move forward one page and swiping left to right will move back one page. The first and simplest page will be one looking very similar to the those shown below. This view is displaying data for Depth of water below the transom (BT) The actual value you see will vary.

Place your finger on the screen about a third of the way from the top of the screen and flick downward to expose the Menu bar. Avoid placing your finger too near the top of the screen else you are likely to initiate the 'drag from top of screen' function of iOS.

To expose the lower Status bar place your finger on the screen about a third of the way from the bottom of the screen and flick upward.

Avoid placing your finger too near the bottom of the screen else you are likely to initiate the 'drag from bottom of screen' function of iOS.

The bottom left of the screen tells you that the app is running in Simulation mode; it also tells you that Port is set to 2000 (more on this later). Bottom right of the screen indicates that you are viewing the first of seven pages.

Place your finger on the screen about a third of the way from the top of the screen and flick upwards to hide the Menu bar. Place your finger on the screen about a third of the way from the bottom of the screen and flick downward to hide the Status bar. With a little practice it will become second nature for you to hide and expose the menu and status bars for any of the data Views.

Simulation Mode

Continuing with the simulator is a good way to become familiar with the app before we connect to the boat's WiFi system.

Tap the “Settings” symbol - Blue gear on the far right of the Navigation Bar. This will bring up a Settings screen. The screen shown here is from version 2.3.3 of the app. Your screen is likely to have a different version number.

Tapping "Source" on the settings screen will show that you have a choice of two simulation files. One in NMEA 0183 and the other in NMEA 2000 format.

The NMEA 2000 file contains similar navigation data to the NMEA 0183 file but with additional information on a vessel's engine(s).

Tapping the top row entitled 'Link to Boat' will bring up a screen similar to the one we saw on app launch. From here we can subscribe or purchase the ability to connect navCenter to your vessels instruments via WiFi. There is more information about this in the section Connect to a Boat.' Tap 'Cancel' to exit the Settings screen.

Try rotating your device to see how the screen is rebuilt as the device orientation changes.
